Literacy Programs

We offer a peer-to-peer tutoring program in which students in the upper grade levels give students at the lower grade levels the attention needed to build their proficiency in reading comprehension and math. This tutoring program occurs once a week for most of the school year.

We offer a two-part reading program to help students build their reading literacy skills. For students from transitional kindergarten to fourth grade, we use the Explode the Code program to help build their skills in phonological awareness, decoding, vocabulary, and comprehension. For students from second to eighth grade, we use the Accelerated Reader program to further build their skills in reading comprehension. This includes a computerized program that tracks their progress over the school year.

We offer a two-part math program to help students work on their math skills. Using the Math Facts in a Flash program and its timed tests, students are able to establish a baseline measure for their skill level, customize their practice sessions, and monitor their level of progress at each step of the way. This computerized program automatically takes students to the next level once they have mastered their current levels. The second part of our math program is perhaps the best method for helping students build their skills. That is, our teachers offer one-on-one personalized instructions before and, sometimes, after school depending on need.

We also offer a computer literacy program for students at all grade levels. The program introduces students to technology from learning how to turn on a computer to learning how to prepare graphs and using various computer programs to help them conduct research for classroom projects. Further, in addition to our classroom computer lab, we will offer access to a mobile computer lab beginning in school year 2013-2014. This mobile lab will consist of a set of 30 Chomebooks – or super-fast internet-dependent laptops – and a printer to help students conduct research and prepare reports.
